A Natural Succession: Community Conservation in Action

Schurch-Thomson August visit
On Sunday afternoon, Aug. 21, TPE hosted a field trip at its Schurch-Thomson Prairie (190 acres), which is located 5 miles south of Blue Mounds in SE Iowa County, WI. Seven people joined me on a perfect day to be outside walking through remnants of original prairie and various restorations.

Another phenology series visit to Schluckebier SNA
The July 23rd installation of the Phenology Series tours at Schluckebier SNA was cancelled Saturday due to severe weather. However, earlier that day I co-hosted a tour sponsored by the Natural Resources Foundation titled 'Birds, Mammals, and Flowers of Schluckebier Prairie SNA'. I'm writing about that trip instead.

40 Year Celebration of Muralt Prairie

Mounds View has babies
Eric Preston emailed me this: "I was out at Mounds View yesterday and checked on the kestrel box there. The babies are healthy and growing. Thanks again for helping the grassland birds (and flowers and all the other cool critters)." The babies are American Kestrels! See the video on YouTube

What's Up at Sugar River Savanna?
Spiderwort, rock-rose, two-flowered Cynthia, prairie phlox, and large-flowered bread-tongue are just some of the plants in bloom. Savanna birds are singing, tree frogs calling, and butterflies flying.
