Work Day - Winona County
Date(s): January 13, 2019
Time: 9:00 AM CST - 3:00 PM CST
The Minnesota Driftless Chapter of The Prairie Enthusiasts will host a workday on Sunday, January 13th during the period of 9:00-3:00. In the event of bad weather on the 13th that prevents us from working, the work day will be rescheduled for the weekend of the 26th and 27th. Everyone is welcome to participate and contribute to this important work.
The work site will be a bluff prairie overlooking Pleasant Valley just outside of Winona, MN (most of the terrain will be steep). Participants can assist with clearing trees and shrubs, and piling and burning the cut logs, limbs, and branches. This was the site of several workdays last winter and participants will have an opportunity to see the progress being made at the site.
From the Homer Road (CR 15) on the southeast edge of Winona, turn south on Pleasant Ridge Road (CR 25). Pleasant Ridge Road turns east and runs along the base (south side) of the bluff prairie where the work will be conducted - park safely on the side of the road at the base of the bluff. Use the following web address to see the site in Google Maps:
Participants will be able to pile cut brush and treat cut stumps. Participants who are skilled in the safe use of gas-powered brush cutters and chainsaws can bring those as well but will need to bring their own gas and oil.
Please wear durable work clothes that will keep you warm, including work gloves and boots. Cotton and wool clothing will be necessary if helping to burn piles of cut brush. Participants should also bring food and water to last them through the work period.
