If you’re interested in prairie restoration plantings where you start from scratch, often with retired cropland, then you’ll want to join us on July 10 at Glenn Heins’ property near St. Charles, in Winona County, to explore his prairie restoration plantings. Glenn has multiple high diversity prairie plantings of various ages and at different stages of establishment, and he enjoys talking with other prairie folks about planting methods and post-planting management. Some of Glenn’s plantings were burned this spring so you’ll get to see contrasts between burned and unburned areas.
As an added bonus, everyone who attends will take home a free copy of the brand new Prairies of Minnesota Landowner Handbook, a 178-page book published by the Minnesota DNR, which is both a reference and workbook for landowners who want to manage, restore, and protect prairies.
The address for Glenn’s property is 22740 Co Rd 37, St Charles, MN 55972-4146, and this is a Google Maps link to it:
Please bring sunscreen, insect repellent, hydrating liquids, and snacks if you’d like them. Glenn has mowed trails/firebreaks around most of the plantings, and the terrain is easy to traverse. One of the plantings is on the other side of the South Fork of the Whitewater River, so if you’d like to see that one be prepared to wade the river at a crossing with ankle-knee deep water.
Glenn is planning to print site maps and species lists for the field trip and it will help him greatly if he knows how many copies to print, so please RSVP to Steve Winter at ([email protected]; 402-310-5460). And if you have any questions, please send those to Steve as well.
