Restoring Eagle Rock Oak Savanna

Be among the first to enjoy the early efforts on privately-owned land in SE Vernon County toward recovering the remnant prairie, oak savanna, and exposed cliffs of Eagle Rock, a 100 foot tall outcropping of sandstone and dolomite. Take in the unique geology of the driftless from 300 feet above the Kickapoo Valley, find out which species are among the first to respond to the first round of clearing and prescribed burning, and see some of the current and future challenges that the landowners are up against. The hike to the top is on a moderately steep and rocky hill road, but the savanna and portions of the prairie on top of the rock are relatively flat. The optional loop around the base of the outcrop to see the lower portion of the prairie and the savanna is more challenging.

Directions: Google Maps Link to Parking Area

From Readstown: Travel south on Hwy 61 approximately one mile out of town and it will be the last driveway on the right (west of Hwy) at the base of the hill (near the end of the first left hand curve heading out of Readstown). Driveway is gravel and leads to a small wooden garage with a red metal roof, which is the general area we’ll be meeting.

From Soldiers Grove: Travel north on Hwy 61 approximately 3 miles out of town and it will be the second driveway to your left off of Hwy 61 (right around the bend from Readstown). Gravel driveway and parking are roughly 1 mile north of Tavern and Day Creek Rds.  There is a wood shed with a red metal roof near the parking area at the base of the hill. This is where we will meet.

Note: Driveway and shed do not show up in any satellite imagery. Parking/meeting location is only visible from Hwy 61 when traveling south from Readstown. Also, if you arrive with ten minutes to spare, take a loop around Day Creek Road for a panoramic view of Eagle Rock from the opposite side of the valley.
