Native Seed Collecting & Installation on Pleasant Bluff (Winona, MN) on Sunday October 20th, 2-5 PM. with Joel Dunnette.
Please RSVP and send questions to Gabe Ericksen (firstname.lastname@example.org).
With spectacular views of Winona and the Mississippi River, this site is one of our largest and most diverse local prairies. Restoration work on this private property has been progressing for 2 years and this is a great opportunity to participate in a large ongoing project and experience a very unique site that does not normally have public access.
Follow this link to a dropped pin on Google maps showing the location of the site. Please park on the road shoulder on the bluff-side of Pleasant Ridge Road.
Please wear long pants and durable shoes/hiking boots. Please note that the terrain is steep and can be difficult to traverse for people with limited mobility. Water and snacks are recommended. If anyone needs to leave early, they will be able to conveniently.
The focus of this excursion is a mix of education about native plants and seed harvesting. Joel Dunnette has done extensive seed collecting in southeast MN and will be available to pass on his knowledge and experience. We will be identifying plants, collecting seed, and then broadcasting it in areas where restoration work has been done and vegetation is sparse.
If the weather looks like it will be wet, a cancellation notification will be sent out to whoever has RSVP'd to Gabe Ericksen (email@example.com). If you have any additional questions, send those to Gabe as well.
In addition to the seed collecting and broadcasting we will be setting up some firebreaks for our large prairie burn next spring. We will do this work from 12:00-2:00, before the seed collecting. We will need a few string-trimmers, backpack leaf blowers, and possibly a few leaf rakes. The goal is to create a comfortably wide mowed break from the top ridge down to the savanna below, separating sections of the prairie that will be burned from sections that won't be burned. Please RSVP and send questions to Gabe Ericksen (firstname.lastname@example.org).
